Ford Government shifts university/college funding to focus on employment outcomes

During the Provincial Budget announcements in April we learned the Ford Government intends to tie post-secondary funding to education outcomes like employment.

CBC recently revealed more details about the funding changes.

Ontario contributes $5 billion annually to post secondary education. The Ford government will be tying 60% of this to outcomes based funding.

We learned yesterday these outcomes will include:

  • Graduate earnings.
  • Number and proportion of graduates in programs with experiential learning.
  • Skills and competencies.
  • Proportion of graduates employed full-time in a related or partially-related field.
  • Proportion of students in identified area of strength.
  • Graduation rate.
There are 4 other unreported metrics at this time.
The province intends to gradually introduce this new funding model with scaling weighting achieving 60% by 2025.
Currently only 1.2-1.4% of college, and university funding is tied to outcomes.
